Logging Job And Its Bigining

By George Dodson

Logging is a good job which started in the Americas in the 1600s. In 1607 with the arrival of settlers in Jamestown, lumber became necessary to the North America economy. Beginning with the Industrial upheaval, the demand of lumber enhanced rapidly though ship building initiates its necessity . People made paper from wood pulp and this process established in the mid 1800s.

Americans went for the search of new land and natural resources in west, during the 19th century. According to the Homestead Act in 1862 the settlers needed at least 160 acres land per family so, the move to the west for it. A large number of trees grown on that plot and it was important for homesteaders to clear the land before it's used.

The loggers used to cut trees from the land situated near river or sea. When all the trees had cut, they simply move to another such a place. Moving the logs through the water was something easy but the loggers began to face problems when they went further inland. In this developed method the oxen and horses were used to pull logs. It was more convenient for the log drivers to drive logs to their desired places when the log workers used to work near a stream. People use other systems. This system included a simple railway made by lumbers to transport the logs. By following different transportation system when the logs came to the main water way then the workers sorted them and send to different places according to their uses.

In past, only males engaged themselves in logging job and at the time of working they used special vocabulary. Faller is a word which defined the workers who helped to fall the tree to ground. At the same time the word bucker used to identify those workers who cut the large tree into convenient size and whistle punk carried the logs to the place from where the logs loaded for transportation. Before the invention of steam engine and gas engine loggers used axes, hand saws and animals for their work.

If you go back to19th or 20th century you can find the worker living near their working area. The life of the loggers was very difficult at that time. They used to work for a long duration of time and survived in an unhealthy environment. Again, lice and different diseases causing pathogens disturbed them always and it was a common matter that they passed several days with the same cloth. That difficult lifestyle gave them a relief to go forward.
